Ask the Snob: Hermes Crocodile Dilemma

crocbirkin331.jpg
Ladies,

First, let me say what a tremendous resource you have been in helping me select truly timeless handbags for my wife. I deeply appreciate your insight. We are coming up on our 20th wedding anniversary and I have secured the opportunity to select from a group of 35 cm matte porosus Birkin bags. My wife owns primarily platinum and white gold jewelry, including a black with palladium 35 cm Birkin. The question is, is there a color combination to avoid in reference to leather vs hardware? The first two I will see are Havanne with palladium and gold hardware. Also, I wonder how you would rate the palette of Croc colors?

Warm regards,
MS

Stella McCartney Engraved Wood Clutch

I love Stella McCartney clothes and would like to be politically correct and support her PETA ways, but her PVC bags have lacked inspiration. And the fact that I am a red-meat eating, crocodile-skin loving, fur- wearing girl has nothing to do with my dislike of her bags! I can only imagine how difficult it is to be a card-carrying PETA member and a fashion designer, but her determination to make it work is admirable. Her latest attempt, the Cherry Wood engraved clutch, is at least interesting and in tune with fashion's current love affair with all things nature. But, as a clutch, it has little functionality. The length is fine at 12 inches and the height at
4 inches, but the depth is a mere 1 inch, which means you can only fit a few bills and credit cards in there (because we all know that wood does not stretch or give). Don't even try shoving a Blackberry or wallet in it. You'll have to leave those things at home and bring a couple of quarters for the pay phone (do they even have pay phones around anymore? I can't remember the last time I saw one). I actually think this would work better as a pencil box. What do you guys think?

Save Your Flesh From Mesh

Top: Felix Rey Allison, $220; Badgley Mischka Saffron Mesh Clutch, $795
Bottom: Laura B Mesh, $822; Maison Martin Margiela Brass Mesh, $1055

We are not behind every trend but this one has really baffled me as to why it is even exists; for some strange reason there is a predominance of a highly impractical material for bags, mesh or chain mail. My stuff by itself is heavy enough, I do not need to be weighed down even more with a bag made out of steel. I mean, if you need to fend off sharks, get a lawyer. I have seen chain mail used a lot actually, I had dinner at Craft (love Tom Collichio, but of course Rocco Dispirito is my boyfriend, so cute!!) and the interior was done with chain mail curtains. It was really amazing and I can appreciate chain mail curtains because it will not cause severe deformity to my back. I will also admit, it has an interesting look and the draping is very dramatic and it makes that really cool swooshing sound. But for bags, it just does not make sense. Like the Maison Martin Margiela bags (I feel bad for making fun of his bags but how does one go from designing classic Hermes to bunchy saggy sacks?). I will say that other than the weight factor, the Margiela mesh bag is adoring to the eye, if I can just pretend for a moment that the alluring slack of the mesh is not due to its heft. It is so simple and I love the use of cream with the silver mesh, and it's the mesh that gives it the edge. I guess you call this a fashion catch 22. I can't say anything upbeat on the other mesh bags here though. A farmer's market sack in mesh is hardly inspiring and the Felix Rey chain shoulder bag just looks trashy (it comes in black and red, double and triple trashy, respectively). OK, I already changed my mind, I will say something nice about the Badgley Mischka evening bag, at least it is small so it won't cause a rotator cuff injury.

Zagliani Crocodile Dream

I am going to ignore the fact that this sumptuous bag is pumped with as much silicone as Pamela Anderson and just focus on the lovely crocodile skin. I stared at this for five minutes and so wanted to click "buy" but closed the page before I gave in to any insane urges! Good thing I can get it out of my system by writing about it to you guys :) We just adore the plushy shape of Zagliani's signature bags and in pale gray crocodile, how could you go wrong? It's classic but funky with pleated details and it's super practical with double interior compartments to keep your keys from scratching your nice wallet plus it has easy to open clasps. It's almost, dare I say it... Perfect! I say almost because 16" wide is a tad too big for me. I can do up to 14" but that's it! We got the most exciting email the other day from an exotic skin tannery that is 100% owned by Hermes. They offered to give us a tour of their facilities in Louisiana and Kelly thought it would be okay to go as long as we were served Alligator burgers. You know, so the exotic skins would be a by product and we wouldn't have to feel guilty for our lust of all things scaly. This darling Zagliani Crocodile Puffy Satchel is at Saks for $11,800 (before you scream, remember Hermes crocodile bags are 30k so this is really a steal! At least that is what you should tell your husband. Tip of the day: Always compare your bag purchases with Hermes and they will seem like bargain basement prices!).

Flash or Stash? Update your Bag Wardrobe for Spring!

korspythongold.jpg
Worried about looking so last season? We've got tips to update your wardrobe without spending a fortune. Learning to shop from your own closet is key to staying stylish and current! Here is a list of what to Flash and what to Stash this season:

FLASH:

Bold Color- Colorful bags remain key for Spring. If you bought a juicy purple bag last season, keep flashin' it girl! If you want to invest in another bag, blue is the color of the season.

Exotics- Don't be stashing that python/ostrich/crocodile bag just yet. Exotics are hotter than ever and with prices rising faster than crude oil, you better recycle all the exotics in your closet! Extra hot are exotics in bright colors!

Celine Daydream Bag

celine_daydream.jpg

Celine is a designer you can always go to for classic wearable pieces. This bag is one of them. Is it going to change your life and keep you up at night thinking about it? Probably not, but if you need something for work and play and keep it for many season, this would be a welcomed addition to your wardrobe. I love the springy yellow, it is actually the only color I like for this bag because it adds youthful casualness. In brown, well, as for most brown bags, it is sullen and boring. And in this bag, quite grandmother-ish. But in the yellow, it is refreshing and hip. I love that they are updating their look for the younger crowd, the incorporation of hardware details and the flap design is definitely a step in the right direction for the design house born after WWII (and did you know they started out by making children's shoes?). There is a smaller day clutch (the white pictured above) that has a chain handle. The proportion is not sitting right for me and the chain totally blows it, but as a clutch, it could be really cute especially in white (the chain can tuck inside). It is made of durable textured deerskin so you can beat this thing up and it will only look better for it. Unfortunately, Net a Porter doesn't have the yellow in yet (only brown, blah!) and is $990.
