Bag Snob pick of the Season: Oscar de la Renta's GOYA bag in Graphite Shagreen is expected to have a waitlist a mile long, call you local boutique now to reserve one!!! (Dallas boutique- 214-346-0400, ask for Mindy)

I know you have been waiting all week to hear more about the GOYA in Graphite Shagreen from Oscar de la Renta and I don't blame you. We are totally excited about it as well and knew the minute it appeared on the ODLR runway that it would be a hit. What we didn't know, however, is that it is made of a rare and unusual soft stingray skin. As most of you know, stingray leather (often called shagreen) is usually quite stiff and heavy but Oscar scoured the world's finest tanneries to find this pliable and stunning shagreen for his GOYA bag. The details of the bag are ultra luxe, the "invisible" seams (the pieces of shagreen are patched on to a soft and gorgeous metallic gray leather which is also the interior of the bag, you can literally turn it inside out and the interior is just as meticulously made as the exterior!) keep the lines of the bag clean and unstructured, and the subtle side piping holds the stylish rounded shape. This bag appeals to both Kelly and I even though we have totally different tastes- she is a casual and easy going type of girl and I am as high maintenance and demanding as they come so it is indeed quite rare for us to both lust for the same bag!

The GOYA fits all of my requirements for a must have bag; it is elegant (for my many social obligations), timelessly stylish (this is a bag I can pull out 30 years from now and still love), roomy without overwhelming- 16"wx10"hx8"d (as a busy working mother, my bags have to fit both mine and my toddler son's needs), it is soft and folds flat for travel (so I'll have more room to pack my Oscar dresses), and its simple lines and logo free leather is impossibly chic (which means I can wear just about anything and look well groomed!). The GOYA will also be available in leather but the shagreen is the one for me (see how high maintenance I am?). Call 214-346-0400 to get on the waitlist or email ODLR personal shopper directly, I will keep you posted of the launch date in late summer!

  • wow! This is stunning!

I have a shagreen clutch but it's rough and hard, I would love to feel this one! It looks soft and yummy.

    How much is it?

  • Hi Janine,

They are going to price it very soon and I will update as soon as I have the info!

I know the Shagreen will be pricey (the supple stingray leather is very expensive but well worth the price!) and the leather versions will be substantially less!

  • And today's word is...STUNNING!

  • I ADORE stingray. Ferragamo has an amazing stingray bag that I am totally lusting after. This one is gorgeous too!!!

  • The color is fine, but what about the handle? The hole is awful small and in that way a bit difficult to carry.

Hi Mette- the handle is not that small- it's a grab and go bag and I carried it around the entire visit- it was fine! xo

  • forget stunning, this bag is perfection! reminds me of petting the stingrays at the aquarium in baltimore when i was little. ahhhhh...memories. ;)

  • I heart sting ray as well. But this bag reminds me of Karung snake skin leather. I like traditional sting ray , I like the durability of it ! . But i'll try the butter soft version. Because i love Oscar..

  • Dear Pam,

I promise you, this is nothing like Karung snake skin at all! It has all the lushness and depth of traditional stingray with none of the stiffness nor weight!
    xo

  • Simply stunning! Must email the personal shopper ASAP since there is no ODLR boutique in Chicago. Ahhh....

  • Yes you should email or call odlr boutique and personal shopper and get on the wait list. i have a feeling the bag will be made in limited edition..
    xo

  • Ok great! Because although Karung is nice its nothing compared to stingray/shagreen. Thanks for clearing that up :)

  • I can't wait to see the leather versions. It's such a unique and chic bag!

  • What if you are 25 and on a budget? I am a Bag Snob in training... maybe the leather version? My mother loves this too. Is there going to be a crocodile version?

  • If you are 25 on a budget or any age on a budget, you must cut your spending in other places. Then have a "bagfund" that you put money in towards the bag you want. Never settle! . Even if it takes a year to save . Its worth it . :)

  • Much more prefer Nancy Gonzales croc tote, way more cheerful!

  • Hi all-

Exciting news- I just heard from Oscar's people that the price of the Goya may be substantially less than they originally anticipated! If they have enough people on the waitlist it would bring the cost of manufacturing down (I'm talking a huge difference) so contact either the boutique or the personal shopper if you know you want one!

  • Lina- have you actually seen a Nancy Gonzalez croc tote? The skin is not the top quality and the quality is just so so. It's great fun and a cheerful bag, but not the best. You can tell from the photo this bag is really well made and the soft stingray is so intriguing.

  • Tina, thanks for the update. As a good bagsnob I emailed the personal shopper. Now the wait begins...

BTW, any ideas for a white bag for the summer? I am considering Bottega or Chanel 2.55. I need something a little smaller than my white oversized Muse.

  • @Morgan i buy expensive bags all the time and i'm only 21 still in college. you just have to skip a couple of meals here and there. ;)

@Lina while the Nancy G is definitely more cheerful, it's not of the same quality and doesn't have half as much snob appeal.

@BagSnobTina that's great news...thanks for always keeping us posted!

  • Hi Julie- I have the patent white 2.55 and it has shades of blue on it from my jeans! So no to the Chanel unless you do not plan to wear jeans with it- in which case go for it cuz it's such a classic look in the jumbo size it is also functional.

As for Bottega, the white lambskin seems kind of dangerous too. My pale pink one is fab but gets dirty if someone just breathes coffee breath near it. The Julie tote is a sturdy white goatskin from Bottega- it's really big but not as big as the giant muse :)

If you are in a casual mood, Miu Miu has the awesome white matelasse bag- the leather is sturdy and will clean easily. http://www.net-a-porter.com/am/product/29119?cm_mmc=LinkshareUS-_-ProductFeed-_-Miu+Miu-_-Totes&siteID=9RQByRmBmGU-2E.pKglvNCFm9BQQ6FRCVw

Oscar also has the oversized Doheny clutch we find so chic.

  • Hi Tina,

That's exactly what I was worried about with the Bottega white calfskin. Too bad about the blue on the Chanel, I definitely plan to wear it with jeans. I might end up getting it anyway and just avoid the jeans/Chanel bag combo.
I ordered the Oscar clutch last week, lol. The Miu Miu is very sweet. It's just casual enough to run around in the summer with my 2 little ones. Hmm, I might end up with a few white bags this summer. There are worse problems...

Thank you for the advice. We have very similar taste and I adore your blog!
    xo Julie

  • Just not feeling this one. Pretty skin, but the bag shape is not for me at all...

  • Ok on the wait list in two stores!

  • cute, but i hope it isn't "goya," as in, bittermelon, hehe.

  • i want to get two bags frm u

  • gorgeous and a classic bag!! you're so lucky to meet odlr!!
