Color Me Mine: Fendi Artist Baguette

I am all for creativity and self expression but this is really just an insult to our intelligence. Let’s see, make a cheap bag out of canvas (cost: $10 for bag+$3 for markers), mark it up 1000%, and call it artistic! Fendi has run out of ideas and is now asking us to do their work, and pay for it!?!?!? Don’t get me wrong, I adore the Fendi Baguette and still have several in my collection I will never part with. A beaded one, a natural cowhide with stone clasp and white stitching, and a shimmering metallic one with embellished details. My point is, I love my Baguettes for their unique design and beauty. And even if I had Pollack induced fantasies of creating psychic chaos, I certainly wouldn’t do it on a canvas bag with magic markers (okay, they’re “Pantone” markers, whatever!) and I definitely would not pay $1,300 for the “privilege”. Actually, I would only buy this if Karl himself would agree to do a caricature of me on the bag titled “Bag Snob”. There, I’ve put it out there, someone call the Kaiser and ask him if he’s game. At Neiman Marcus for Pre-Order. No need to rush, this won’t sell out anytime soon. But enough of what I think. What about you? Any urges to Color Me Mine?

seriously, what is going on with respectable (or should i say once respectable) premier designers these days? theyve all gone mad.

i would never pay for this baguette. in fact, I want fendi to pay ME for my production time.

this artist baguette is so awful i could cry.

HAHAHAHA well put. And it’s not even an original idea… they are just doing it to their bags and not shoes; Adidas had the AdiColor line for their sneakers a couple years ago and they packaged them in wood boxes so that they would look like the painting boxes they used in the time of Da Vinci.

I saw this bag on the last page of Vogue a few issues ago. I think it’s a nice nod to the arts and crafts movement, but you’re right, the price is ri-donc-ulous. Vogue suggested you give it to the most artistic person you know to decorate it, but unless you have Ahn Duong on speed dial, I would pass. If I’m paying that much money, I shouldn’t have to provide the graphic design.

It would have sparkled less controversy if they’ve priced it honestly, this is so outrageously overpriced it makes it look even more ridiculous than it already is.

The only use I can find for it is to ask your favorite singer/actor to place his autograph on the bag so you can proudly show it off. But for this sum, I prefer to get a CD signed.

First off nothing is original. 2nd i think its a collectors pc and well worth the tag for the FENDI lover. And according to my area store it will sell out. This is a total niche bag for a die hard fendi collector . So that makes it art. Artist make paintings that cost them 4 for the paint and 11 dollars for the canvas and sell it for tens of thousands of dollars.

I am not a fendi fan , but i would buy it if it was prada because i collect all limited edition pradas. Simple Simple..

pam, you are right. canvas and paint costs $14 but it is the ARTIST who makes the piece valuable.

in this case, we are the artists and Fendi is acting as the art supply store by providing us the canvas and markers. so, this bag should cost only 13 dollars and by no means will it be a collector’s item.

my suggestion is for us to draw to our heart’s content and sell it back to Fendi for tens of thousands of dollars.

    Pam–

Good artists sell paintings for thousands of dollars because people are paying for the amount of time and quality of artwork. If you spend 100 hours painting and someone pays $2000 for the painting, you’re only getting paid $20 an hour. Think how many people get paid more than that.

That said, this bag and its packaging is a joke. Looks like something Crayola makes and I can pick up from Walgreens. I totally agree with PJH–”If I’m paying that much money, I shouldn’t have to provide the graphic design.”

I stand by my statement. You guys can pick it to pcs to fit your view. But my view stays the same. Its all art. and for the collector its REAL art. You have no idea what expenses go into promoting and presenting a bag like this. How many people are feed because of thi bag.

and FYI : All art is real.

Happy times to the FENDI collector who will enjoy adding this pc of ART into their collection. Art evokes emotions and this bag with or without “painting by numbers” evokes emotion. :) . The fact that we are even having this mini debate will move people to BUY ..

the evil part of my brain is loving the idea of having them print some obscene design across the front. or just leave it blank. i wonder if they’d still charge $1300.

it’s a sad world if “art” is defined by label, price tag, promotion, or the fact that it evokes a slight twinge of emotion. seriously sad.

after reading about this bag, i don’t know whether i should laugh (a ridiculous idea for a designer bag), be mad (as a consumer), or feel utterly sorry for fendi. maybe karl lagerfeld should just have signed this bag and sold it? i would be seriously curious as to how this bag will fare with bag lovers.

How could a package that merely contains paint and a cheap bag be referred to as art? It becomes art only when it becomes a medium for talent.

And how could Fendi justify the price on this bag???

Let’s face it, this bag is simply just a blank canvass being sold for a ridiculously exorbitant amount.

I would buy this bag, but only if I can doodle on it and sell it to someone willing to pay me $$$$$ for my time and effort.

Whats sad is you took my words out of context. And art is ALLLLLLL about emotion. People dont ‘paint’ unless they are “moved” and people dont “buy” unless they are “moved” . If nothing else. No one said art is ‘DEFINED’ by label price tag and promotion .

But it is indeed about emotion.. it gets people thinking and talking … Debate is healthy and so are opinions.

interesting you bring up the point of context (which i am taking out of context – ooh!) context – rather than content – can have a huge effect on the overall meaning of a work of art. anything remotely stirring about this bag has nothing to do with it’s content, as you seem to be emphasizing, which is about as banal as a bedazzler or an easter egg dying kit. if you honestly think you could draw a pretty picture on it and have it be a valid work of art, then i don’t really know what to say.

in terms of context, it’s being sold by fendi for $1300 as some sorry excuse for a one-of-a-kind/upscale arts and crafts project for the financially irresponsible and creatively starved. most people can see that, which makes it controversial, but not art. i wonder if banksy is behind all this?

Now I am going to buy it ! and put it in a frame.. I have no plans of drawing on it .. I will leave it untouched in its packaging . Drawing does not equal art. The concept and the fact that i am typing about it with passion , the whole moment is art!. Again opinions and debate are good for the soul a long as people learn to not attack a person with personal digs. Fyi. I am far from financially irresponsible and its also silly to brand colletors of fendi who might have plans of buying it as such. In a nut shell if you like it you buy it if you dont you move on. Simple Simple.. This passion post makes me wanna buy TWO and frame em both.. JMO

In my opinion, Pam, you cannot be righteous and preach about not attacking a person with personal digs… wasn’t your last parting shot a personal dig in a way – “This passion post makes me wanna buy TWO and frame em both…”

Pity those who part with their money just to buy a worthless paint-your-own-bag kit.

it was actually not a personal dig seeing as you do not own the bag, nor collect many fendi bags (as you said in another comment). i am not continuing this discussion any further, because it ludicrous and i believe disrespectful to the bagsnobs and their website.

I have to agree, the bag is completely overpriced and the whole “paint it yourself” thing is gimmicky. But…I DO like the design of the box! I’ll bet it would make a lovely and original picture frame.
