The latest from YSL cruise line, the Raspail "Paint" canvas tote. This time I really will not say a single word other than it is $995 and also available in navy. Thousands of readers around the globe consult us before buying bags and The Daily Mail in the UK has said Bag Snob can make or break a bag and possibly the brand behind it so here is your chance to decide the fate of a bag!

Tell me, what do you think of the YSL Paint bag? Snob or Slob? We'd love to hear why you voted the way you did so please leave a comment after voting!

  • Definitely NOT a slob bag and here's why; its canvas so ideal for a quick trip to the store, or even the beach. How fab would this look with a white bikini and huge oversized sunglasses?? The red/navy and clean white combo is perfect for the forthcoming nautical trend and also draws on the ombre effect as seen in Prada for Fall which will translate into Spring, and the fact that it has an edgy painted take on the ombre makes it younger, fresher and unique. And at $895 this is a cheap thrill! Have I convinced you?

  • This tote just doesn't grab me at all. I like my YSL bags to look sleek and polished, not like half-finished home renovations. Pass.

  • If this were a $40 tote from Target, it might be cute. As is, it feels like an insult to our intelligence.

  • oh my god are they kidding with this bag!!! It looks like my 5 year old boy got into my closet and decided to try out his coloring skills on this bag. Honestly does ysl think that this bag is going to to be popular with people that have taste!!!

  • Why would anyone want to walk around looking like they paint houses for a living and that they dropped a can of paint on their YSL bag?

  • I get the idea, but I wouldn't buy it. So yeah, as art it works, as fashion, it don't.

  • Anon, $895 for this canvas bag is not a cheap thrill by any stretch of the imagination. Agree with Rachael - I would totally buy it at Target for $40, but at its current price - total slob.

  • Here's the thing about this bag: the paint strokes/splatters are a trend right now or are going to be a trend and this bag is a cute interpretation of said trend. It is canvas, sleek and it would brighten up and outfit. I would love to wear either the red or the navy one with my dark brown wool winter coat and make it less boring of a look.

The price isnt bad for a YSL and even though it is trendy it will be a statement piece for years to come.

    I like it!

  • not feeling this bag at all. it looks like some concoction out of the '80s. i can just imagine the girl from flashdance taking this bag to her dance studio. also, this is waaay overpriced.

  • eww I wouldn't buy it even if it were a $40 tote from target. YSL or not I won't be seen with this bag!

  • I never take price into consideration because I have never spend more than $500.00 on a bag (especially now with akid in college!)This frees me up to judge purely on the aesthetics. I saw the navy and white in an ad and I liked it alot. I agree with the first comment by anonymous; It is crisp and clean and bold and perfect for resort.

  • This bag looks like it came right from a horror movie! Like blood is just gushing down the wall or something. Looks like a chic trick-or-treat bag.

  • I like it, but I wouldn't pay $895 for it. It's canvas! Even a bag snob shouldn't spend that much on a beach tote, unless it's bottega!

  • Ew. Maybe if the white isn't so white, like if it was a warm tone closer to the red, it might work. As it is, it doesn't even look like a whole bag against that background. Kinda reminds me of a sunfish that looks like a giant stub of half a fish.

  • FIrst off, it's canvas for $895. Second the red looks like blood dripping down, not paint. I agree with Rachel, for $40 bucks at target it's a maybe.

  • i might consider it in blue but not in red - looks like dripping blood.

  • The only thing this bag "accomplishes" is that the person who carries it wishes to convey the impression that they are so wealthy that they can literally throw money away.

This attitude is characteristic of jaded people who resent true quality and the discipline and standards required to achieve real elegance. People who feel guilty, resentful or unworthy of wealth they possess might also appreciate this.

  • Agree with Lydia...the first thing I thought of with the red was that it looked half soaked in blood...perhaps it works better in Navy but I just don't love it either way.

  • ahh... oh my god is it for real?? thats all i can say... 850 for canvas and red and those horrid white lines.. looks generic and plain old bad

  • I love YSL bags in fact I had to arrange a whole ebay clearance sale last year to justify the purcahse of my purple downtown last summer but this one why ?
I generaly don't like to pay so much money for canvas or felt bags (muse in felt for winter 2007 at least here in london), but if it's nice canvas I won't mind
The red however reminds me of two things :
Blood spattering out of the bag so people will look at me as if I killed some animal and I am carrying around the body inside the bag
A misused pot of red paint
Still YSL has produced many amazing things so we are allowed one mistake

  • If you're a rich person its appealing, but if bags are a conscious decision and you have to pick and choose, you don't spend 900 on a canvas paint dipped bag. But I do like it!

  • I'm not overly excited about this bag but it's not slob either. I think combined with a wisely chosen outfit, it might be kinda cute. Something casual and summerly.

  • Someone really consult with you before buying bags? wow

  • i go to art school and i can totally see myself walking around with this on my arm, art supplies inside. how cute would it be with dark skinny jeans? i think its adorable and way different than anything on the market right now. its graphic without being too literal. this bag deffinatly takes the right girl to carry it off. its deffinatly not a classic it bag, but its something funky and different. i give thumbs up to ysl.

  • it's very graphic and i could see it looking extremely cool on the right person. i would take off the little tag though. obviously snap judgement (at least in this color) is "omg horror movie!" but if you look at it closely it has some nice details, like the piping along the bottom.

i'm not saying i would buy it, or even wear it, i just feel the need to defend it a bit. not every bag needs to be a neutral color or croc to be fab :)

  • Gucci had a canvas bag last season for ~$900 and got marked down to $400. But by the end of the season, this bag won't be trendy anymore.

  • Tina, I totally admire you for biting your tongue on this one. I'm sorry, canvas & paint?!! And how lazy does one have to be to pass this uninspiring box with straps off as a design? Totally amateur.

  • great, I would of loved to of designed this
anti bag, love the color, love the idea, can't tell
about the excecution, but assume YSL does well with this.

  • for some reason, it reminds me of like... a slaughtered, bleeding lamb or something.

  • Why, it's preposterous.

I just saw some other appalling YSL creations on

    http://shoedaydreams.blogspot.com/

and commented that they were the product of a design deadline met at 4:59 on a Friday afternoon.

Similar could be said of this bag, but I'd venture that it was done at 8:01 on a Monday morning, after a Lost Weekend.

  • agree with everyone who mentioned about dripping blood, YSL or not. just perfect as movie poster background for the next hollywood horror b-movie!

  • this is total slob. i would probably pay $15 if this was nondesigner, and Consider buying this for $50, even if it was YSL... i mean, half bloody canvas; i can recreate this look for myself and probably with better straps, a bit longer so you can put it on your shoulder. the straps look a bit short - hence you half to hold it in your hand - and since i'm short, the length of the bag just looks like it would hit my knee. not a good look for the bag to be that far down on the body.

  • can i have it ,pleaseeeeeeeee

  • The navy might not be so bad...but the red looks like it was the only survivor at the discount bin.

  • This is reminiscent of Moschino's chocolate dripping on vanilla bag, which is the holy grail of all bags, but this looks cheap and is expensive!!! I will wait for Moschino to rerelease the chocolate dripping someday, in my dreams . ..

  • This bag was at the YSL Sample sale yesterday in NYC for $200 and they still were not selling!
