Check out the crocodile birkins and HAC bags on the Hermes Spring 2008 runway, can you tell which is which? For those of you who are not Hermes aficionados, HAC (Haut a Courrois) was the original "birkin" before Jane Birkin complained it was too tall to fit under her airplane seat and the handles too small to properly tote on her arm. They shortened and elongated the bag, made the handles longer and called it a Birkin et voila, an instant icon. Here is how you can tell the difference, the HAC handles are tiny and the body is long as opposed to wide, all very subtle differences but a trained eye can spot them a mile a way. They also cost less than the birkin and are much easier to come by.

At first glance I felt like the ready to wear was a campy tribute to I Dream of Jeannie but with a closer look, I found a beautifully crafted collection beneath all the props. I love the luxe crocodile riding boots in vibrant fuschia and snowy white, who else but Gaultier would appreciate the humour in white riding boots?

  • HACs look rather dull and boring and I can see why they cost less. the fall collection was magnificent, and by the time i finished browsing the looks my jaw was down to my waist. the flat croc kellys and the birkins where to DIE FOR. but i thought the pair of croc riding pants was a bit eccentric and a waste of croc and money. overall one of my fav collections.

  • The Haut a Courrois is one of the most important designs that Hermes currently offers. It resonates the identity of the house (it is originally used to carry riding boots), and it is an Hermes tradition (the HAC's debut was in the 1892). I didn't expect that it was cheaper than the Birkin. The HAC is considered by Hermes as a man's bag (it was originally designed for men in mind) so I guess it is the offical Mirkin, and better for me since I want that one! :D

  • 50 birkins latta and I am offically bored with hermes!

  • You are right, the HAC is quite masculine, tall and rigid. The birkin is softer and wider, more feminine. I do like both though! that blue ostrich is to die.

  • One can never bore of Hermes, 'tis true luxury that will last beyond your lifetime and mine.
Keep it coming Bag Snob, Hermes is the ultimate!

  • I agree, Hermes is the ultimate! that gray croc birkin is fabulous.

Sigh, another rectangular thing with a handle and some gubbins! When will Hermes come up with something interesting for a change.

  • I'm not picky, I'd take either bag! And those fuschia riding boots are showstoppers!

My first Hermes bag was the HAC in blue jean. Love the color of the ostrich one.

The ready to wear collection looks very Indian, but somehow I like it.

  • in the words of Britney (gasp!)

    Gimme Gimme Gimme More!

    Gimme More!!!

    Gimme gimme gimme More!!! lolz

  • I don't think the HAC is masculine at all! It is very slenderizing and chic. I think its shape is quite feminine.
