Bottega Veneta Expandable Tote in Grey

I was on the verge of buying this when Tina stopped me because she said it was "stodgy". I agree this bag is on the older side with its squareness and woven leather but the grey, they call it Iron, makes the bag so super hip for today. The varying shades of grey in the woven leather is amazing and besides, I'm a young hip chick so how can I ever look stodgy? Well, I have to admit, my main attraction is with the functionality of this bag - there are 3 compartments that expand like an accordion so even if you don't plan on stuffing it like a Thanksgiving turkey, being able to open your bag up completely sure makes it easier to find your stuff! I want this as a family outing bag because it is big enough to put diapers and toys but has the middle zip compartment for can't lose items like keys, phone and wallet. And the straps are adjustable, which is great for me because they are always too short for my not so super thin arms. So maybe the motivation behind wanting this bag isn't all about being hip and trendy but honestly, the color makes it so much younger! Now I am torn because I called Tina this time so she can talk me into getting it but instead she shot me down! I still might get it, my guy at Neiman's is holding is for me. It is $2780, available at Neiman Marcus or Bottega Veneta online (Ana the personal online shopper is super sweet!)

  • I have eyeballed this bag for months, becuase of the color and function.
Just saw a BV last night with all the compartments, but a fold over
magnetic flap, and an optional shoulder strap.
    Hmmmmmm

  • Hi Kelly!

I must say that my husband will agree with Tina. I saw this in the local BV boutique last week and that's exactly what he said. Nevertheless we went there last weekend to check it out again (my insistence of course!). Guess what? It was gone...someone else already bought it!!! Well, if it's not for me, then it's not meant to be.

  • Yes this is a very smart and functional bag. Love the color as well. For price points like this, its nice to see a bag worth it inside and out. Its smart & gorgeous!!! Gotta have it

  • Hi Kelly!

It is a bit too square... and yes, stodgy. but I can see the appeal.

  • I have this exact same bag in off-white and I love it. I use it everyday for work and it manages to hold a lot. I don't see stodgy unless YOU are stodgy and you wear stodgy clothes to complete the look. I think this bag is chic and functional.

  • Ummm, Kelly, if you love this Iron color, there is also a hobo version which is pretty functional IMO and very chic as well that retails for $2,250.

  • im so close to getting this bag. im also considering the chocolate brown. though like you said, the grey is very cool amd young.
    GET IT!

  • I'm with Caroline on this one. I have this bag in Old Petra (dark lilac) and it's grown up and sophisticated, but I'm not old; nor do I dress old or conservatively, so the bag is simply chic and elegant and elevates whatever I'm wearing.

I'm not really a fan of amorphous hobo styles, so I appreciate that this has a more defined shape while still having a soft and squishy factor that makes it delicious to touch. And it's incredibly capacious. It looks absolutely stunning in Iron, too.

  • if I may, this is not the best looking BV bag. i saw it last season in another color and it just looks so.... "stodgy" as you put it.

it looks manly and like a briefcase. though if you are really a hip young chick I doubt you would care what we thought about it.

  • I agree with Tina-don´t buy this bag. Bv has had so many woven bags that this is the time to go forward.I am waiting for something else from the company. I believe they can do it. The bag in question has nothing new-only the color perhaps. But,it is worth waiting . I´m sure something new is on the way.

  • What does IMO stand for??? in my opinion?? :)

  • I think this bag is classy and appealling in a rather generic sense rather than a hip or trendy, yet creative sense. I do think it's a rather large bag, however; if you have things to fill it, sometimes it is good to have one of this size. I have to admit, I think I could see myself walking around with this bag because it's simple, yet good looking and big enough to fill just about anything (ok, maybe not a dead body, but I didn't plan on using this purse for that, hahaha). I really do like the design of this bag, however; the color (or shade) is much more interesting because it's a rarity.

  • Sorry but just returned this bag used it 4 times and handle fell apart did not offer to repair made me think maybe an ongoing problem with handles I am madly in love with BV but very disappointed with this one

  • seriously, which would you ladies prefer, this or the cabat. had to decide bwten these two and ended up with a cabat, now im wodnering if i made the right choice... *sigh*

  • STODGY? This is a chic, elegant, and a very "I know my style, and I know how to rock it" bag. You have to get!!! I LOVE it in "Iron"!
