The fashion extravaganza of the week was the spectacular show put forth by Oscar de la Renta on Monday. Despite heavy traffic and scattered rain, Victoria Beckham and New York’s most high profile social girls paid their respects to the man who has reigned over classic womenswear for the last four decades. Star studded as it was, however, no one made a grander entrance than Anna Wintour with US Open champ Roger Federer. Arriving mere minutes before the show began; Wintour and Federer received a round of cheers and applause as they wound their way through the room to their seats. I was confused at first and had no idea why everyone was clapping until the pair walked past me. Ms. Wintour showed off her favorite tennis champ grinning from ear to ear and looking like a proud mother! The show was held outside the tents at the 583 ballroom on Park and 63rd, the gorgeous former Georgian style church that provided the perfect back drop for a stunning collection. A total of 67 looks floated down a circular runway formed through the room with performance by the funky choir group the Polyphonic Spree, I have never seen such a grand show!
The collection was a fresh and modern interpretation of the classic looks Oscar is well known for with emphasis on several of Spring’s developing trends- safari jacket, beading, strong patterns and bold color. There were more than a few gowns that took my breath away; a black and cream silk organza number with feather embroidered hem that will most likely be seen on the red carpet come award season as will the stunning finale piece, a black and white silk organza embroidered petal gown with a spray of peacock feathers at the waist. Safari inspired suits and frocks complemented an array of exotic skin bags which I was very excited to see. For day, a shimmering olive silk faille jacket or ruffled red and cream striped cotton blouse, both worn with cream cotton silk shantung pants and cumberband style satin belts which will satiate the needs of the luncheon crowd. Peacock cloche hats added glamour and drama to the simple chic outfits. I left the show with dreamy thoughts of balls I will have to attend for an excuse to bring one of the sublimely sweeping gowns home. If you do not have one piece of Oscar in you closet, your wardrobe is not complete.
