Stefano Pilati can do no wrong in our eyes. From shoes to ready to wear and of course bags, he has brought new life to YSL by turning to the classic aesthetics favored by Yves himself. He's wowed us with hit bag after hit bag since he took over (yes, in addition to the RTW, he's even found time to design the handbags, something most designers do not do) and his plethora of platform shoes and boots have the sleek and chic tripping over themselves each season, literally. So imagine my disappointment when I came across this frumpy lump of a bag. I know it's too much to ask from one person to never fail but this is a huge departure from the YSL bags of past seasons. There is nothing about the Faubourg tote that appeals to me; the drawstring gold chain with lock looks cumbersome, the handles are set too close together to be of use and that shade of navy reminds me of frumpy schoolmarms. Now you know I love navy but in patent or in a brighter shade, not this muted drab version. Maybe it's because I am way on the other side of 30 and can no longer see the edgy hipness of carrying around an old lady bag for fear I have become an actual old lady myself. So my advice to anyone over 25 is to stick with the Muse, the Downtown, the Rive Gauche, or the latest Uptown Bag.
Just out of curiosity, what do you guys think? Is the Faubourg for the Frumpy Slob or Edgy Snob?

Dear Bag Snobs Tina and Kelly, I am a male bag snob who went a little crazy this past spring season, purchasing three BV man bags, a Louis Vuitton messenger in the pale grey shade (not the monogram we all abhore), and a Burberry Prorsum which is turning out to be my favorite (although the heaviest of them all). I would like to know your opinion on the YSL men's Syd Medium Tote in chocoloate calf that is shown on the YSL.com site under men's accessories. The YSL Paris plaque does give me slight pause - but I would still love to get your opinion. I just called the store...the medium runs $1100.
This his a very beautiful bag :)
I agree with you 100% I pre-ordered the YSL Uptown, in navy patent, from Saks for my birthday. I wish I could justify one of these in the patent cheetah, which was posted at the Neiman's site today. So many bags, too little money. I can only justify these purchases twice a year.
Right before I stopped by Bagsnob I was checking out the fall handbag lineup at N.Marcus and you took the words out of my mouth! It's frumpy!I was going to post a note and you guys beat me to it!
The proportions seem off and the chain doesn't work. It seems like it wouldn't be functional because it's too deep and the top doesn't look like it would open wide enough.
I like the color though. That part works for me.
Frumpy frumpy frumpy
It looks so heavy and like something you'd pick up at Ann Taylor for $30.
I'd rather hold out for the Uptown, since it has much more style. That chain looks like it would be uncomfortable next to the body. Just meh.
Do you think that it is also a handbag for men? I saw the luxury edition in python leather on the men runway! FABULOUS!!!
Definitely a no-no for me. Perhaps Stefano was being lazy at the time of designing this bag..? On the other hand, still can't get over the Uptown bag which I'd just bought.
Hello Male Bag Snobs!
I knew there were many of you on our site! To answer your questions, I think this would work as a man bag if you take that chain off. It'd be more masculine.
As for the Syd tote in chocolate calf, need you ask? go for it!
xoxo
Thank you Tina! :-)
yes! I am a male bag snob! lol... well! I am not sure whether YSL sac downtown should be better for men or sac Faubourg! Well, there will be a YSL sac oversea, but i haven't ever seen one. you know? btw... I really love your blog!
best!!!
Are you girls high? This bag is major! You will swallow your words!!!!
