Erva East West Bag: Snob or Slob?

The latest from Erva, the East West bag (why every designer calls their bags East West is beyond me, it's neither interesting nor original) with double coin pockets and short twisted handle in dove gray. I like the fresh take on outer pockets but not sure about the wooden press stud clasp; the point of outer pockets is accessibility and if you need to more than two seconds to open it, it is no longer functional. I do love the color and the soft leather, the oval opening also allows you to peek in the entire bag and not have to dig around aimlessly for your keys. This is not a bag I'd invest $718 on since there are so many great bags on sale right now but for the urban girl looking for something different, this may be just the bag for you! At Net-a-porter.

What do you Snobbers think of the Erva East West bag? For the Snob or Slob?

  • OMG You read my mind with the East West bag name! What is it about East/West that most designers have to name their bags after it. I am so sick of hearing it. It's like they are running out of names and have to recycle the old ones.

  • I think it is called East West because of the shape (width). It is rectangular as opposed to the North South shape (height). It is a common shape so maybe that's why they all have the same name.

  • i'm kind of obsessed with dove grey at the moment so i like the color. but it looks rather shrunken-headish on the model. eek.

  • The humungous coin-purse pockets on the sides kill it...otherwise, ordinary bag. Not much to look at.

  • i think most things named "east west" are named so because they supposedly encompass east and west coast aesthetics (edgy yet refined). or something. not sure this bag actually does that though.

  • I like the original Bonnie Cashin bags better. The lines were cleaner and the handles were very sleek.

  • First thought that came to mind was Bottega Veneta’s Cocker. And the Cocker is definitely the better option. The only good point about this Erva bag is the colour. Like Kamo, I’m currently obsessed with dove grey. And I would much rather have (read willing to pay for) Tod's buckle bag in dove grey than this.

  • Irena's right - bags can either be described as East/West (or E/W), or North/South (N/S), depending on their proportions.

An East/West bag is wider than it is high (like most hobos [and the bag in question]) and a North/West bag is higher than it is wide (like most totes).

Therefore, East/West is actually a descriptive term; not the bag's name.

BTW, I like Erva's styling and am thinking of buying their Double Clutch.
