Valentino Bags Miss the Mark

Valentino Garavani, undeniable one of the most glamorous and well respected designers of our time suprisingly falls short with his bag collection. For someone who once chided Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz as looking like "bag ladies" for wearing "jogging trousers" and "appearing homeless", you would think that everything that has his name on it must meet the star quality standards he implores. I imagine his clientele; they are not the hipsters who buy Balenciaga or Chloe, they are the Birkin and Chanel 2.55 bunch who uses Tod's totes for their dry cleaning. That is why this studded tote is completely baffling - it misses both those markets. Same with the tasteless leopard print tote. These bags look like they are targeting lottery winners. They are certainly not for the same women who wear his gowns and suits. I am really disappointed because unlike, say Marc Jacobs, I expect perfect taste and style from Valentino. Studded Tote $1950, Cavallino Maculato Leopard Print Tote $2450; Crocheted Satin Frame Bag $2290; Lace and Leather satchel $1890, all available at Neiman Marcus.

  • It is sad but oh so true - there just is no accounting for taste. Personally I tend to avoid anything with studs! Back to my ostrich obsession - have you girls seen the YSL Rive Gauche tote in taupe ostrich???

  • And is it just me or does the bag on the bottom right look like some sort of male stripper g-string slapped onto a flowery background???

  • YA! Totally! A stripper's g-string wrapped in really bad curtains! It's just revolting any way you slice it. You think they must be putting this out as some sort of joke, and laughing at every sucker who buys one! Brook, London

  • "Back to my ostrich obsession - have you girls seen the YSL Rive Gauche tote in taupe ostrich???"

How funny!!! I was just drooling over the same bag. It also comes in olive and a lighter (celadon) green color...also in ostrich. YUM

  • they dont seem *that* bad....compared to the marc jacobs ones you just reviewed....
