Thin was not "in" at Madrid Fashion Week

Stick thin models were rejected from the runway during Madrid fashion week last week, Madrid city council sponsored the shows and ordered that every model on show must have a BMI of 18 (and a minimum weight of 121 pounds for models who are 5'9"). Models of less than 16 BMI were said to be unhealthy and offered medical assistance from onsite nutrionists. I am guessing lots of serrano ham with bread and manchega cheese were on hand. Too bad London and New York didn't adopt similar rules cuz the models all looked like they could use a good meal.

  • You know how boxers and wrestlers are always trying to make their weight by not eating. I'm imagining all these models shoving a bunch of food into their mouths or drink gallons of water right before their weight in, so they can get on the catwalk. ha.

I must confess that I am pleased that some members of the fashion industry are saying that the models are TOO THIN! I happen to like the curves on women and it's a little difficult to have curves when you are 5'10" and 96lbs.
Now, if we could just get models over the age of 25 showing Haute Couture I would be almost giddy! XOXO, HK

  • I know I am a bit late "weighing in" here, but was just noticing in your more recent Galliano post that the model in the pants on the bottom right just looked like there were bones under those pants. That doesn't look good on her, nor does it begin to show what they will look like on anyone else. Oh and I am digging that gown next to skeletor - g.o.r.g.e.o.u.s. ;)

I agree wholeheartedly, but that agreement comes with a warning: I don't want average size women up there. I would still like to see thin models, but I don't want a size 12 up on the runway.

Just wanted to say that Madrid fashion week is brilliant event and I have a great respect for the banning of women who are too thin. There is nothing wrong with eating healthy and stating trim and models who are an 8-10 great, but sixe 6's who live off of 20 Benson and a coffee need to given help and told that this aint right. Hopefully this is the start of getting the balance right. I have written about it on my Madrid vaction blog.
