The Gryson Skye
By Bag Snob Tina

gryson bag.jpg

Joy Gryson, former Director of Design and Development for Marc Jacobs handbags and accessories (remember the Stella, Sophia, and Zoe bags?), has struck out on her own and created a line of edgy bags at prices that won’t make you homeless. Her bags are reminiscent of Marc Jacobs’ pre-Louis Vuitton days and we love them! Gryson’s approach to design is to make the inside of a bag as beautiful as the outside and making this level of luxury approachable and affordable. I love this Skye leather satchel and have ordered mine in chocolate brown for fall. The braided handle adds sophistication to this other wise casual bag. I won’t be using the shoulder strap but for those of you who need both hands free for cell phone and starbucks this is the perfect bag! $695 at Bergdorf Goodman. Pre-order yours today! At these prices they will be sold out before Labor Day.

This would be fun in a bright color. I really like the handle and the fact that it has a strap.

And, um, hello K, you have to let your peeps know about when and where these secret sample sales are.

You’re in luck! More colors of the Gryson Skye will be available at the end of july!

We just got word from Gryson’s Rep in New York that the bags are available at Bergdorf, Neiman, Barney’s, and shoptwig.com.

    Hi Sassy,

I ordered the medium size. Isn’t it a great bag? Contact Lynn Rosetti, Gryson’s rep for questions re: colors. lynn@stevenalan.com

As we predicted, the Chocolate Skye has sold out at Bergdorf’s so those of you who didn’t jump on it when we told you to will have to contact Lynn.

    hi,

I have never blogged before so not sure how to do this. But I would love to read what you guys have to say as I am a purse lover myself. I love Marc Jacobs Kooba and Botkier. I just read what someone said about the marc jacobs secret sample sale. How does one find out about that stuff. I just contaced Botkeir and learned they just had a sample sale but I am in CA not NY. Anyone know of anything coming up in Northern CA?

I am thinking I want to buy the Gryson from the Bergdorf site but wonder if anyone knows of other outlets for them.

    Thanks so much,

    bag lover in Norcal

    Dear Bag Snob,

I log on everyday to your site and I must say it is the best. The question I have for you is about the Gryson collection. I have pre-ordered the large Gryson (Olivia) because I completely loved the look however I’m concerned it is way to large for an everday bag.. I own the Chloe paddington, the Edith and the twegy Balenciaga bag.. (these are some of my latest additions) Now that you know the size and shape I prefer….Your opinion would be so very helpful.. Thank you for all the laughs, you are so funny and so correct…A fellow bag snob..

    Dear Bag Snob,

I had to write you again I inquired before about the Gryson Olivia purchase. You completely helped, as I know only you could. I ordered the Gryson Skye. I love it so much. The detail work on this alone could rival many other much more expensive bags. I am so completely hooked and just in time now that Phebe Philo has left the House of Chloe I needed a new place to shop. I did however pick up her chocolate Silverardo and it is just awesome.

Thank you for the most awesome informative site. I look forward to checking in everday….A fellow bag snob

Hello Ya’ All. Yes, I was just as excited when I got my Gryson Olivia BUT to my (everyone’s) worst nightmare, the handle broke on my first use. I really mean it broke and I found out that they are only binded with SCOTCH TAPE.

The Store Manager allowed me to exchange for a new one. However I just lost my “trust” on the bag. I dont even dare to carry them by their handle :( Anyone experience the same thing?? Email me at bs0522@hotmail.com should u wanna see the pictures

    Dear Bag Snob,

I include the email Peter Gryson sent, See if this can be useful for other

readers as he mentioned something about their improved quality. Thanks

    Dear Shirley,

My name is Peter Gryson, and I am writing to apologize

for the defect that occurred with your “Olivia” bag

braided handle. We are very upset that this happened

and we are glad that On Pedder replaced this unit for

    you.

We have had some isolated incidents with our braided

handles from our first production run, but we have

since addressed the problem. Moreover I just returned

from Italy last week and we have completely revised

our mode of construction for our braided handle and as

a result these type of issues should not present

    themselves in the future.

I am glad to hear you like the look of the bags and I

am very sorry for this inconvenience. We are committed

to excellence in quality as well as design and we want

great customers like you to feel confident in our

    brand.

Again, please accept our most sincere apology, and we

hope you will consider GRYSON bags and shoes in

future, the Spring 07 line looks great!!!!!

    Humbly and with respect,

    Peter Gryson

    Dear Bag Snob,

I recently splurged on the Olivia bag by Gryson (size: large, color: black) and was in love with it until I discovered that the black leather was rubbing off and staining my khaki coat. I’m rather disconcerted as this was a big ticket purchase for me — and I thought that I was investing in a quality, made-to-last item.

I purchased the bag from a boutique in Williamsburg with a strict return policy (store credit w/in fourteen days) and am now at a loss as to what to do. I’d greatly appreciate contact information for the folks at Gryson.

    Warm regards,

    Marie Clare Sillick

I am looking to buy the Olivia bag for my wife. Found it at Coop and other places, but I’m a bit concerned about the fragility of the product after reading about these incidents. I guess the ones being sold now have better braided handles (according to Mr. Gryson himself). I don’t want it to break within a year (or 2 or 3 for that matter). Which place would have the best customer service (“insurance”)?

    Thanks in advance.

I have a Gryson Olivia in Smoke, and I love it. MANY compliments. I think a problem with big bags is that people are tempted to cram too much (heavy) stuff into them. Although they are big, they really aren’t constructed to hold much more weight then smaller bags in many cases. I’m certainly not making excuses for fraying handles (yikes), but just offering some food for thought. A big bag isn’t necessarily going to replace carrying a purse and a tote–it’s just going to look like you’re on trend for one brief fleeting moment.

As someone who works in the leather goods business in Italy, my heart went out to the Grysons when I read about the problems they experienced with the bags. It is clear they have been putting their heart and soul (and significant investment) into developing this new line of bags and some lazy supplier in Italy took a shortcut and they are now paying the price. It has happened to me so many times.

Anyway, it appears that they are taking the right approach by apologizing to customers personally and fixing the problem.

The bags are beautiful and the concept is a winner. I wish Gryson success. They just have to be careful with the Italian craftspeople. They will learn to deal with them in time!

I finally did buy the Olivia bag a few weeks ago for my wife.

Unfortunately, one of the braids of one handle broke, now I have to deal with Barney’s, where I bought it from. It’s only one braid, but will it be one braid a month until the handles are obsolete (it is a $926 (with tax) bag!). Since the handles didn’t even last a month (although she was aware of the fragility of the handles and was careful), I’m wondering if this is a problem that extends to all the bags or if it’s just shoddy worksmanship on some of the series.

Should I return the bag completely or give it another chance, because my wife does still love the bag and the company.

I would love any ideas from you experts out there.

    Thanks,

    Joe

    Hi Joe,

I just heard back from Gryson’s rep, who is currently on vacation with no access to her computer. Please accept her sincere apologies, you may take it back to Barney’s to exchange or send to her directly to replace or repair. Unfortunately you probably got one from the first production which experienced quality issues which has been addressed! It is difficult to gauge how a manufacturer will be when starting a new business, but we love how Gryson’s rep are always on top of things!

I feel much better but I would prefer to contact the rep since I want to be sure that I can get a bag that is from the series that has found a solution to the “handle problem”.

    Hello,

I just recieved the Gryson Skye in camel. I love it! I have been looking at this bag for months and I finally ordered it from Nieman Marcus. But after reading these comments I am afraid that the handles will break. At 700.00 I would expect it to last for years. Has anyone had the problem with the handles breaking on the Skye? I am trying to decide on keeping it or returning it to Nieman Marcus. I love this bag and want to keep it! Any information would be appreciated.

I have a black Gryson Tate which I love. I don’t use it much, but recently the zipper head broke on the top pocket (there are 2 zippered pockets on the front). I salvaged the Gryson signature “pull.” Now I need to either replace the zipper head or the entire zipper and have the “pull” inserted in the zipper head so the top & bottom pockets match. I contacted the corporate headquarters indicated on the website, but no response. Today I emailed Lynn (the rep) who is out of the office until 8 Sept. I sure hope she can help me. Any handbag repair places anyone can recommend. I’ve already spent almost $50 shipping the bag to & from a repair in NYC without any luck. The zipper heads they use are “closed” on top, so the Gryson “pull” could not be attached. I’m probably a bit neurotic, but I prefer to call it being a perfectionist! Thanks for any help/advice.
